We took them to Jackson and roamed the halls contacting as many of the movers and shakers we could to get this passed. My friend managed to find Jeff Smith, the chair at the time of Judiciary B. When she presented the petition to him, he refused to even look at it and told her that as long as he was the chair, the laws were not going to change. The fact that the latest bill was killed is not surprising. The reasoning as quoted is not surprising. These people year after year do and say the same damn thing. I don't think enough emphasis is being made to make people aware that a first offense cruelty to livestock is a felony.

Comment on What do you think about David Waide's, President Farm Bureau, Comment re: Dog/Cat Felony Cruelty Law

He sounded like a very uneducated person with his head buried deep in the sand. I found it embarrassing. I am frequently embarrassed when I see people from MS saying things that are so far from mainstream generally accepted truths and thinking. It lifted my spirits to know that there are that many people out there who do care about our animals, because sometimes it seems only the bad abusers are in the media.
We have all got to stay togeather on this endeaver!!
Thank you

Comment on What do you think about David Waide's, President Farm Bureau, Comment re: Dog/Cat Felony Cruelty Law

First, I must admit that even though I support felony laws for pets I also wanted to give Farm Bureau the benefit of the doubt and assumed that FB had a reasonable explanation for their position.

Then I listened to the radio show this a.m. and am now embarassed to say that I have insurance with these people.

Mr. Waide said that he opposes any cruelty law that carries a felony charge because we shouldn't have to pay to incarcerate them? Is this to imply that we shouldn't incarcerate rapists and such because it costs the taxpayers money? Or is he simply saying that the man who ties his dog to a tree and burns it alive shouldn't have to serve jail time?

He went on to say that if these abusers have a felony on their record then they won't be able to get a decent job when they get out of jail and therefore will be unable to contribute to our society here in Mississippi. What? Does he honestly think that anyone really cares if these types of people can get great paying jobs when they're finished serving their sentence? Is Mr. Waide a paid lobbyist for felon rights or what?

Obviously, he and The MS Farm Bureau care deeply for the type of human being that can do such unspeakable acts of violence to cats and dogs. So, I ask you this Mr. Waide: will you open your doors and be so kind as to give these criminals a good paying job at The Farm Bureau after they've done their time? After all, no one seems to care more about them and their welfare than you.

Comment on Thoughts on Farm Bureau Demonstration Jackson, MS 6-17-09

I agree! It definitely made more people aware of the issues with problems of passing this bill. However, it must be spread to every corner of every county so EVERYONE knows and supports the passage of the animal cruelty law bill for making it a felony offense for cats and dogs!

Comment on Thoughts on Farm Bureau Demonstration Jackson, MS 6-17-09

I think the protest was a great success because:
-it brought attention to the issue;
-informed many people about how FB has stood in the way of getting a felony law for cats & dogs passed in our state;
-educated people about animal cruelty in our state; and
-informed others about what they can do to help
Kudos to everyone involved in the protest!

Comment on Response to Media Blogs

Thank you Jim for writing your comment to MS-FACT. It is not our intent to downplay any others from pursuing issues that touch closely to their heart and home. But, we also deserve the respect we have for our passion for tougher laws to help protect the well-being of cats and dogs. I, personally, am an Occupational Therapist, which is an occupation to help people to live quality lives to their fullest. But, in retrospect to that, I have a passion for man's best friends, cats and dogs. I volunteer at my local humane society and the number of cruelty cases that come through the doors is sometimes overwhelming. You can see the pain and suffering in their eyes they have endured during their lives. This is why I am so passionate about passing laws to help protect dogs and cats. In turn, somewhere down the line, if those known to abuse animals were prosecuted and gotten help in the early stages, may in turn save someone elses life. As research shows, most who have abused animals at an early age, in turn, result in committing violate crimes against people somewhere down the road. It is not our purpose to delve into the farmers, hunters, fishing, or food industry in the state. We just want laws to protect our most dearest friends and companions, dogs and cats.

With that said, we are not PETA and are a group who work tiredlessly to help the dogs and cats in our state from some of the most horrific cases of cruelty. Most of us see such cruelty throughout our state on a daily basis. We feel it is time for MS to step up and stop condoning these practices with no more than a slap on the hand, or in most instances, no consequence at all.

This is why we are desperately trying to spread the word as this inhumane behavior has been overlooked for way to long.

Gail

Comment on Response to Media Blogs

Dear MS-FACT,

Hi. My name is Jim. I recently posted a response to a Clarion Ledger news article about a protest in front of Farm Bureau. My comments were very general, and I made comparisons to animal rights and human rights. Please accept my apology. Whether my comments were or were not true or valid, my comments were misdirected. I am very passionate about animals and animal rights. My wife and I have two wonderful cats--one male and one female. The have been neutered and spayed. Several years ago, we watched an HBO program that focused on a class B kennel in Arkansas. The kennel owner frequented a flea market in north Mississippi to purchase animals, most stolen dogs, for storage in his kennel and sale for testing. The conditions were very terrible. The animals were abused and killed. We have seen so many programs and news articles about animal abuse. The issue of abortion is such a passionate issue that some people may be hasty in comparing human rights to animal rights. Furthermore, in that haste, they may loose sight of the differences between your organization's mission, and those organizations that are opposed to hunting altogether, for example. With all do respect, if your supporters call people idiots, then their passion is as misdirected as mine. Kindly explain to them you're not PETA, or you're not against hunting. I would like to talk to you more about your mission, and I may contribute to your cause.

Respectfully,

Jim
